Fort Myer sits on Arlington’s East side up against the Potomac River and is home to the third United States infantry Regiment which is also the oldest infantry Regiment in the US. This US Army post is adjacent to the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington County, just minutes from downtown Washington DC and the capital buildings. Originally established as Fort Whipple, the post was renamed after General Albert J Meyer who established the signal school of instruction for Army and Navy officers in 1869.
Fort Myer is also home to several exhibition flights by world-famous aviation pilot Orville Wright of the Wright brothers from 1908 to 1909. Also, the first radio telecommunications was started at Fort Myer in 1911. Today, Fort Myer is headquarters to service personnel working throughout the National Capital Region. It provides housing and services to thousands of active duty, reserve and retired soldiers, airmen, reservists and Marines. It is also currently home to the military’s largest child development center and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
surrounding Fort Myer neighborhood are the Pentagon City to the south, Arlington Views as well as Penrose and Arlington Heights to the southwest, Ashton Heights to the east, Courthouse, North Rosslyn, Lyon Village and Colonial Village to the north.
The assorted single-family homes, condominiums and estates in the above areas surrounding Fort Myer range in price from about $350,000 to over $2 million depending on size, amenities, and condition. This assortment is enough to satisfy the taste and pocket book of anyone. Look to pay much more for the neighborhoods in the north such as Clarendon, Courthouse, Lyon Village, Rosslyn. These homes start at about $580,000 although you may be able to find some co-op homes and condominiums for less. To the south in Crystal City, Pentagon City, and Aurora Hills, there are more single detached homes as well as condominiums starting at around $430,000.
Although the surrounding neighborhoods have numerous amenities, do not forget the Fort Myer Market which has just about everything for those with access to the base. It is also home to Virginia’s only bowling center open to all.
